How to Write Clear, SEO-Friendly URL Slugs

A good URL slug describes the page, stays readable, and remains stable after publication.

Describe the page in a few words

A slug should help a person understand the destination before opening it. Remove filler words when they add no meaning, but keep enough context to distinguish the page from other content. A short accurate phrase is better than a list of keyword variations.

Use lowercase letters and hyphens

Lowercase Latin letters, numbers and hyphens are broadly compatible and easy to share. Hyphens clearly separate words. Avoid spaces, underscores, repeated separators and characters that require confusing URL encoding.

Transliterate consistently

For content originally titled in Cyrillic, transliteration creates a portable Latin-character address. Use the same conversion rules across the site. The ZT4 slug generator applies one predictable map and removes unsupported symbols.

Do not change published URLs casually

An established URL can accumulate links, bookmarks and search signals. If it must change, create a server-side 301 redirect from the exact old address to the closest relevant new page. Update internal links and the sitemap rather than relying on the redirect forever.

Avoid dates unless they matter

A date in the slug can make evergreen guidance look outdated. Include it for date-specific reports, events or annual editions; omit it when the page will be updated in place.
